14/52 Drinking In Style

I’ve recently been accused of photographing drinks too many times, but I’d like to note that out of the four pictures I did with drinks on three were actually food coloring and water, and one single cider, which I didn’t drink either :D

I have don’t know how the idea came, but I ended up going shopping and bought some sour cherries and some food coloring. I originally wanted to make it blue, but they didn’t have that, so I took yellow. To be honest with you, the whole thing was an excuse to buy some sour cherries and eat them after the shoot.

Recipe for the cocktail: water, food coloring, toothpicks and sour cherries (no, you shouldn’t drink it)

Lighting is simple: one strobe behind the translucent backdrop (I used some paper and the strobe was at 1/4th of power). I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I actually cheated a bit, since I photographed the portrait and the drop separately and later on composited it in GIMP. I really should get an assistant, that would save me a lot of post processing…

Note: this can get pretty messy. The flash holder and the duct tape that was holding the glass sideways wasn’t strong enough, so after holding a break I went back to my “studio” (euphemism for my room) and noticed that the glass fell over and everything was covered in yellow food coloring.

Settings for the shot:
Exposure: 1/160 sec
Aperture: F16
ISO: 100
Focal length: 50mm
Camera: Canon 40D + EF 50mm F1.8
