17/52 Christmas Angel

This idea came from my sister, who became my model as well. The original idea was only to wrap her into Christmas lights, but I decided to use longer shutter speeds and make wing-like light trails with the flash set to rear curtain sync.

I used my black background and made a two light setup: a 24” softbox (60x60 cm) and a hair light. Not much to say about it… You just have to be able to control the amount of light spilling onto the background, because if the light hits the background, it will make grey instead of black.

Shutter speed should be long enough for making light trails, but fast enough to avoid ghosting (I used 0.3 seconds). Instruct the model only to move her hands and keep her head still. Flashes were set to rare curtain sync.

Settings for the shot:
Exposure: 0.3 sec
Aperture: F5
ISO: 100
Focal length: 50mm
Camera: Canon 40D + EF 50mm F1.8

WARNING: be sure to use LED lights when you’re doing this, otherwise you might burn your model.
