21/52 Girls in Snow

My sister and one of her girlfriends bought coats with the same design and asked me weather I would make a few pictures of them together in the new coats. I obviously said yes, and we went to do some portraits on Gellért Mountain.

I packed about half of my strobist gear, 3 strobes, umbrellas, light stands, tripod etc., but in the end I only used a reflector, my 50mm F1.8 lens and shot with natural light. If you are doing outdoor portraits in snow, there is absolutely no point in adding strobes, since the snow reflect light from all around, creating a beautifully soft, even light everywhere.

This time the main problem was dealing with the models... Usually each shot ended up with one of them posing well and the other is laughing, falling over in the snow or pulling faces. Some times the problem was not with the facial expressions, but the direction they were looking in, so I directed them to look in the same way and that usually helped.

Another problem was the ice and snow… I fell over on a slope with my camera in my hand, but luckily nothing was harmed.

Settings for the shot:
Exposure: 1/200 sec
Aperture: F1.8
ISO: 100
Focal length: 50mm
Camera: Canon 40D + EF 50mm F1.8
