This is the story of how I started shopping in a hardware store and ended up singing in front of my camera…
This morning I went to the hardware store to buy some polystyrene boards for another project, but as I got home, I had the idea to try to use them as a background, just try a quick little shoot. So I quickly improvised a plan for a shoot and then ended up doing a totally different image, the one you see here…
I know a lot of you think I shoot my self because I’m egocentric (which I am a bit, but that’s another question), but it’s actually because I don’t like to ask people to come to a shoot without figuring out the lighting and the technique beforehand, so I’m the most convenient to use as a model, simple as that.
I first planned a black and white shot, me wearing a jacket and dressed up elegantly, but that ended up pretty boring, as you can see, I nearly fell asleep on my own photoshoot…
So I put up my Ireland hoodie, threw some green gels on my lights, put on some awesome music and got back to my St Paddy’s day mood from last week.
I just sat in front of the camera, sang the song as it was playing and snapped a few pics during the song… Some of the pictures turned out hilarious, but I’m too embarrassed to put them up, but I liked this one, so I shared it
The background is pretty simple; I put the polystyrene boards beside each other and put a piece of wood on top to help balance the whole thing. Lighting is a bit more complex, but still not rocket science. I set up a hair light camera left behind me and a gridded octobox on a boom arm as key, plus I added another light camera right to create some shadows on the background.
Settings for the shot:Exposure: 1/160 sec
